After the farmers market, we were famished and decided to stay in St Paul for brunch. A quick search on the phone turned up SIX restaurants that were open on Saturday afternoon, which is a ridiculously small number. I guess most St Paul restaurants are only open for dinner, for some strange reason. Don't people eat earlier in the day? So through the process of elimination, we ended up at
The Buttered Tin, and I'm so glad we did.
The restaurant is in a neighborhood called
Lowertown, "originally the lower landing on the Mississippi River. It was the first port of access to the Twin Cities on the river. Several warehouse, railroad, banking, and distribution buildings served the entire Upper Midwest from 1880 to 1920. It is a Registered Historic District." [Wikipedia]

Find that guy familiar? :) Yes, Jamie is wearing a jacket. It is getting cold already. :( |

And this wins the prize for strangest parking garage ever.
The space used to be a storefront that was just left as is, so it almost looks like a used car dealership. |

Buildings around The Buttered Tin. A little run-down looking, but full of character. |
There was a 15 minute wait for a table, so we explored a little. When we checked in less than 10 minutes later, our table was ready. We both had large glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice, and I ordered
The Buttered Tin Hash, smoked trout, poached organic eggs, horseradish chive cream & toast. Jamie had the
Pig's Eye Breakfast, two organic eggs your way with toast & choice of
Fischer Farms sage sausage patty, country ham or bacon, and home fries or hash browns.

The Buttered Tin Hash |
I'm a sucker for anything that comes in a tiny skillet. I loved my hash, and Jamie equally enjoyed his over easy eggs, flavorful sausage patties and perfectly crisp hash browns. That strawberry jam on the buttered thick sliced toast, it's THE BEST strawberry jam I've had in a while. Yum, yum, yum. The photo is making me hungry, think I'll go make myself some lunch now. :)
