Not in Saint Paul... Girl Scout cookies are delivered to your doorstep! We received this handwritten note in our mailbox the other day:
We filled out our order on the back of the note [resisting the urge to correct her spelling], dropped it off down the street, and a few days later, two Girl Scouts showed up with eight boxes of delicious cookies [yeah, we kinda went overboard]. Note there is no mention about price or payment, we looked it up on the Girl Scout website, and we didn't realize, but the cookies "sell for different prices in different areas of the country. Each of the 112 Girl Scout councils sets its own price, based on its needs and its knowledge of the local market". Here in Saint Paul, it's $4 a box.
The Girl Scout cookie program helps girls develop 5 essential skills: Goal Setting, Decision Making, Money Management, People Skills and Business Ethics.
Another interesting tidbit - there are two licensed bakers of Girl Scout cookies, and their recipes and ingredients may differ slightly, hence some of the cookies have two names. Samoas = Caramel deLites, Do-si-dos = Peanut Butter Sandwich, Tagalongs = Peanut Butter Patties, etc.
And a weird fact that drives Jamie insane - the cookie boxes are all sized differently, no two are the same. Some are taller, some are narrower, some are fatter... No standardization whatsoever. I wonder what could be the reason for this, maybe they just have really poor quality control?
