I almost did not recognize the man, his signature look up till recently was a black t-shirt and jeans. Louis C.K. on stage in a suit and tie, wha...!?
Let's back it up. Last night, not wanting to deal with traffic [there's road works / construction everywhere!] and parking in downtown Minneapolis, we opted to take an Uber to Target Center. Our chatty driver was in the know, we hadn't heard about the exclusive sold-out after-show, Louis the altruist was also going to perform at the Acme Comedy Company later that night, all proceeds to benefit the club, as the venue faces possible relocation.
Showtime was at 8 pm, not knowing if there were any opening acts, we arrived a good half hour before, went through a quick security line, and headed to our seats. It was our first visit to the Target Center, the arena feels like a mix of different building types - a movie theater, sports stadium, and airport all rolled into one.

$50 tickets - Section 131, Row Y, Seats 9 & 10 |
A few minutes past 8 pm, the music stopped and a soft-spoken squeaky voice off-stage reminded us mouthbreathers of what's already posted on the large projection screens on either side of the stage and on the back of the seats: "NO cell phones, texting, tweeting, heckling, talking, cameras, recording, devices of any kind during the show. Violators will be ejected. No refunds will be given. Thank you for your cooperation!" The voice was eventually revealed to be Louis C.K.'s, and he introduced the first [and best, imho] of three opening acts - Michelle Wolf. Joe List and Joe Machi followed, each performing for a few minutes [could have been anywhere from 5 to 15, I am a bad judge of time]. By the time Louis took the stage, the sold-out arena was filled with almost 15,000 fans [Minnesotans don't arrive early or on time for shows, it seems].
As only Louis can, his dark and bleak set - covering topics such as beheadings, abortion, suicide, sex, teachers, children, marriage, divorce, and just life in general - had us crying with laughter. With impeccable timing and flawless delivery, his observations are almost always universal truths that no one likes to admit, let alone say out loud. The man is a master at his craft.
