Victor's 1959 Café

Located in the Southwest neighborhood of King Field, Victor's 1959 Café is a small ramshackle shack that doesn't look like it should still be standing. We've all heard the term dive bar, this place is a dive restaurant, for sure. The interior walls and random surfaces are covered with scribblings from previous customers. Ambiance aside, ask anyone who has the best brunch / Cuban food in the Twin Cities, Victor's name will invariably come up.

The café opens at 8am daily, but we were forewarned that the lines get ridiculous on the weekends, so we got there at 9am on a Sunday, and were immediately seated at one of the many open booths [okay, mental note, 9am is too early for brunch, it's still breakfast time!]. I mistakenly ordered a sweetened Café Con Leche [coffee with milk, a latte, basically], and could feel the dental cavities forming with each sip, it was way too sugary.

Jamie ordered the special with Cuban toast, I think it had bistec and chorizo, if memory serves... The Cuban toast was delicious. Fluffy white bread that was pressed and grilled, mmmm. I got the Basque Scrambler, 3 eggs scrambled and topped with a creole stew of spanish chorizo, ham, onions, garlic, green & red peppers. The food was tasty, but I'm not sure what all the hype is about. I certainly wouldn't stand in line for more than 15 minutes to eat here. Maybe I'll change my mind once we come back for lunch and try the Sandwich Cubano.

The place was packed when we were done with our meal, around 10am. So yeah, it's good value for money, and decent Cuban food, we'll be back at some point.
