SPCO with the Miró Quartet
Jamie and I hadn't done any cultural events since we moved to the Twin Cities, last Saturday we rectified that lapse and attended a Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra concert with the Miró Quartet at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.
The program for the performance included:
[Steven Schick, conductor]
Symphony No. 1 in C Major, Opus 21, Ludwig van Beethoven
How Wild the Sea for String Quartet & Chamber Orchestra, Kevin Puts
Become River, John Luther Adams
Overture to The Barber of Seville, Gioachino Rossini
The two water related pieces were contemporary premieres; Miró Quartet joined the orchestra for the regional premiere of the new work from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts. How Wild the Sea was inspired by the tsunami that hit Japan in 2011.
Disturbingly, the people seated behind us were talking during the performance, and someone started snoring [!!!] midway through the second piece... thankfully almost the whole row behind us left after intermission. Jamie and I were surprised at the uncouthness, these were older people [in their 50s to 70s?] mind you, one would think they would know how to behave at concert by now. In any case, we didn't let the uncivilized mouth breathers detract from our enjoyment.
